Many individuals suffering from SUD have been found to have underlying mental illnesses which drives an individual to self-medicate with substance use. In most cases the patient’s underlying mental illness goes undiagnosed and untreated and self-medication eventually becomes Substance Use Disorder. In some cases, a client’s SUD can exacerbate or give rise to other mental illnesses.
